Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 5G is Definitely Real, Confirmed for Debut in Q1 2020

For a minute there, Samsung and Huawei battled secretly for the launch of the first 5 G phone, but Samsung seems eager to accept it. We thought it would be the Huawei MatePad Pro, but in a 5 G version one has yet to make a debut. Samsung has confirmed the launch of the world's first 5 G tablet in Korea in Q1 2020.

It's the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 5 G and I'm really wondering if the specs-wise remains the same. During the February 11th event meant for the Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy S20, it's very likely to debut next month. The slate would probably keep 2560x 1600 pixel display of the same Super AMOLED 10.5 inch and the slim metal body, with a thickness of less than 6 mm on the waistline. We could also get the same Snapdragon 855 CPU inside, unless Samsung wants a S855+ or S865 chip to go up the stakes.

There is a S Pen in the mix, magnetically attached to the rear side, in a special slot. We also have a keyboard, of course, which hooks up to pogo pins. Other than that it's all RAM 6 or 8 GB, storage 128 GB or 256 GB and a dual back camera with a 13 MP and 5 MP sensor. The OG model had 4 G connectivity, ANT+, USB-C, Dual Band WiFi, GPS, but no NFC. Because of the extra components and perhaps also a battery update, I expect the 420 gram weight to increase.

Here we are only speculating and spit-balling, so don't read too much into it. It's possibly the same Tab S6 in the end but with a 5 G modem. I expect a price hike of at least $100 or $200.

Don't forget about the versatility of Android with DeX which brings a Windows-like UI.

Samsung Magnetic Hinge For Dual Display Smartphone
Samsung Magnetic Hinge For Dual Display Smartphone

Here’s What’s New! Samsung already has a foldable phone out there, the Galaxy Fold, and now plans another. The Galaxy Fold 2 is almost confirmed to be a clamshell and it is due to arrive on February 11th 2020. At the same time, Samsung is also focusing on dual display smartphones and foldable devices with hinges for future models. Below is the latest such patent.

There's a patent from Samsung that came up late December and it reveals that the company is still working on a dual display device that could end up resembling the Microsoft Surface Duo or Surface Neo. The essence of the new patent is the way the hinge is hidden from view and the screens get closer so that a zero seam approach is established. Samsung might have been waiting a bit longer with this concept and introducing a Galaxy Fold, but with their foldable, they only wanted to be first on the market.

Samsung's documents describe a method of connecting two electronic devices via a hinge to provide a larger display on a smartphone. Unfolding the device will trigger the bigger screen. As the Surface Duo showed when it was unveiled last fall, it is very hard to pull this off. To hide the mechanisms and make them more efficient, Samsung's hidden hinge relies on a magnet group. The patent demonstrates rotation on an axis of the contact point, linked with both sides of the handset. Here tubular structures seem key.

A new type of hinge makes open and close the dual display smartphone in different positions but also retains those positions. Thanks to this mechanism the back camera can also flip to the front side for taking selfies. The patent was filed in June 2019 so there will be no beef between companies before the Surface Duo. The main problem with a revolutionary hinge is that a lot of times it has to be tested until it proves it can actually work properly.

Samsung has been preparing an expanded lineup of tablets for some time now and we find the Samsung Galaxy Tab A4s among those products. Bluetooth authorities recently approved the system and it has now also passed the FCC. It revealed its key details and it sounds like a mid-range offering.

With a 4800 mAh battery in the mix, the upcoming tablet will arrive and it will most likely sport a metallic body. The FCC has approved Samsung's new tablet, indicating it should launch early, likely on CES 2020. The FCC page also addresses support for fast 15W charging and the codename SM-T307U is shown as well. Apart from the WiFi one, there is also the optional LTE connectivity for another version. There are also references in the documents to the size of the device: 201.9x 112.4 mm (length and width), with a diagonal of 237.1 mm.

The phone is an 8.3 incher, with HD or Full HD resolution and apart from WiFi and LTE, it will also have 4 G LTE and GPS. In fact, the Bluetooth SIG listing stated that it will have Bluetooth 5.0. Tab A4s runs on Android 9.0 Pie and provides 32 GB of storage. We're expecting something like 3 GB of RAM on board, maybe 2 GB and an older Exynos processor, maybe the one from the Galaxy A40 or A50. An 8 megapixel back camera and 2 MP front shooter might make the cut as well.

Samsung Profits

Samsung has offered the strongest indication yet that, despite telling investors that operating profit fell by a third in the latest quarter, its troubles could be over.

Samsung said sales were about 59 trillion Won (£ 39bn) ahead of the official announcement of its Q4 results, with operating profits of about 7.1 trillion won (£ 4.7bn).

This is more than an estimate of some analysts.

The Korean technology giant has endured several challenging quarters as relatively sluggish smartphone sales were compounded by a memory chip market crash. Samsung is the world's leading manufacturer in the field, with traditionally two-thided memory chips responsible for its profits.

The company provides many of its rivals, which means it is particularly susceptible to any downturn, while a declining data center market has hit the demand for server chips. In addition, higher inventories have led to a drop in prices.

Nevertheless, the company will be confident that, in addition to demand for 5 G handsets, the chip industry will be revived to reduce trade conflicts between the US and China. Rival Micron also predicted a rebound in the near future, claiming it had hit a "cyclical bottom" for its own shareholders.

The mobile business of Samsung is expected to gain significantly. It is expected to reveal a new foldable handset and a new version of the Samsung Galaxy S flagship at next month's event in San Francisco.
